We're pretty good on this scale. I still have my bicycle from 1986, we drive cars into the ground, chop and burn wood for (some of our) heat, wear clothes until they fall off, and so on. During power outages, we fall back to a more primitive lifestyle, with candles, heat and cooking from the wood stove, cooling then cold showers. But on the water front, we're not so good. We have a big bath that we fill up with hot water and get social in. We let the water run while brushing our teeth. We do a lot of laundry. My thought on this is maybe it's okay, for now. Like running the air conditioner in your car, the energy is passing through the system whether you tap into it or not. My father used to run the air in summer with the windows rolled down. He liked the cool dry air around his toes and the warm humid air on his face. In the same way, water flows through the system. You use it or not. Behind us, we have a nice pond now, courtesy of the local beavers. That space used to be a cranberry bog. We could easily haul that water and boil it. I've thought about sinking a well, maybe outfitted with a hand pump. But these are tomorrow's problems.
