Another explanation, meeting Occam's Razor standards, is individual variation. Some people are just ornery. Nurture can have an effect, but some of who people are is just what they were born with.

Here's a theory: people who insist that everything be exactly where it's supposed to be are worried about their world falling apart. They figure if they can keep their shoes all lined up in the proper order, everything will be fine. I was like that after my parents split. Some years later, I let go of it, mostly.
